What the Book is About

Teach Yourself Visually Photoshop Elements 8 describes photo editing functions of Photoshop Elements 8, using a stylized graphical formal, rich with clear examples, illustrated with 3 color photos per page. The book covers the major capabilities: photo, basic photo editing tools, selection tools, image manipulation tools, color change tools, layers, filters, text tools, automation, output, and so on.

Because Elements 8 is so complex, no single book can easily cover all its features. Teach Yourself Visually Photoshop Elements 8 uses an attractive graphic format of hand holding exercises to cover the most important features of photo editing for the amateur photographer and novice user. For users who want a little more power than iPhoto, this book provides nice introduction to one of the most powerful, multifaceted photo editing tools on the market in an easy to follow organization.

Target Audience

This book targets the amateur photographer and novice photo editor, who prefer their step-by-step instructions via labeled screenshots, graphics, and photos. iPhoto users and photo editing experts will find that this book provides a slick vehicle for learning Elements.

What to Expect

If you don't like to read pages of text, this is the book for you, assuming that you like pictures. And why would you want to learn about photo editing unless you liked pictures. The book has a unique format that works. I typically like to read text and instruction manuals to learn intricate tools, but I appreciated the concise approach offered by these well-designed, visually-oriented examples. I'd reached my limits with iPhoto and I wanted to go to the next step in photo editing. But not a quantum leap, just a baby step.

This book gave me that next step. When I wanted to do some sophisticated edits, I had to look elsewhere. But Teach Yourself Visually Photoshop Elements 8 gave me step-by-step pictures with no extraneous text to wade through. It satisfied my novice and more than novice needs. If you're a beginner at fixing photos, not sure where to begin, then this book is your roadmap.

The most striking feature of this book is the style of using graphics to present the information. I learned a lot about Elements by using this book. The author structured the predominant functions of Elements into a well-organized set of examples to guide the beginner user. This book is a good introduction companion for the software.

A (Outstanding)

I admire authors who can construct a book that can be used for both an introduction and for reference with concise examples.

Final Words

I like this book because of its easy to follow layout. I feel that the author put a great deal of thought into what to present and what to leave out, and I agree with his decisions for the most part. I think that most people will be able to follow the examples and will learn about Elements. When you are ready to learn about Photoshop Elements 8, this is a good book to include in your library.
